Responses in the context of the alarm state due to Covid-19 pandemic. A socio-occupational perspective

Authors

Abstract

Activity has been altered on a global scale by the establishment of regulatory measures to manage the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The health aspect of the epidemic captures attention with infections, deaths and healthcare problems. Many people have experienced fear and feelings of fragility. Some people experienced infection directly. Other people suffered the loss of their loved ones in circumstances that prevented the farewell rituals. In many countries, such as Spain, due to the institutional response through a “state of alarm” and prolonged home confinement for weeks, the activity and lifestyle of the entire population was radically modified. The entire occupational sphere was radically altered, although in a different way depending on the vital and work position of each person. The new situation, with the sense of sanitary threat, the imperative to modify the organization of daily life and the consequent occupational and relational limitations, has made it possible to observe a wide range of spontaneous community and personal responses in order to cope with new vital conditions and the problems associated with these changes. This work collects these responses from a socio-occupational point of view, after considering the threat and the associated occupational disturbances. These responses reveal the ability to build community in difficult situations, human flexibility, and the centrality of relationships and occupation as motivators of human behaviour.
