Abstract

This is a descriptive-exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, carried out at the Support Center for Child and Adolescent with Cancer, in João Pessoa, Paraíba. It aimed to know the experiences of family caregivers of children and adolescents with cancer. Eight caregivers residing in different municipalities of the state participated in the study. A semistructured interview was used as a data collection instrument, carried out in February and March of 2018. The analysis of the collected material was performed through the analysis of thematic content. The study obeyed Resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council. The findings revealed the emergence of three main categories: Category 1: women caregivers report changes in their life routines after family members started cancer treatment; Category 2: main difficulties faced by caregivers in the process of caring for the child and adolescent with cancer and Category 3: strategies for the promotion of mental health of carers of children and adolescents with cancer. It was identified that family caregivers present demands for care, since multiple aspects of their lives have undergone significant changes since the beginning of treatment of their relatives with cancer. Caregivers face difficulties in the physical, psychological and financial dimensions, correlated to the care process provided, among other important aspects.
